Gmail already has video calls on Android for everyone: how it works and how to deactivate them

The Gmail application has been updated to add support for video calls. We explain how they work and how you can deactivate them.

Gmail is for many the main email application. Either because it is the one that is pre-installed on your mobile or because it is simply the one that seems to be of the best quality, it is one of the central axes of our digital life.

Based on that, Google decided that Gmail would stop being jut an email application to be a completely specialized application for telecommuting. In the last few hours you have received the first of these features, which are video calls.

Video calls in Gmail with Google Meet reach the whole world

After starting its rollout to G-Suite accounts, video calls are starting to reach Gmail. It is not that Google has created a new application apart from Duo or Meet, but that the mail application has integrated the latter into Gmail. The positive part is that you don’t have to download Google Meet to access video calls.

Once you update Gmail, a bottom bar with two icons should appear: Mail, where the usual Gmail is, and Meet.

The latter will show us the Meet meetings that we have pending, although it will also give us the option to create a new meeting or join any other with a code.

When done from Gmail, it is necessary that we give permission to the microphone and the camera so that our image and voice are transmitted to the video call. As expected, during this we will be able to stop sharing our image and voice. As an extra addition we also have the possibility of playing the audio of the video call on the phone or any device connected by Bluetooth.

Can I remove them from my mobile?

The novelty of Gmail is very interesting for those who are using Google video calls to telecommute, but it is possible that if you do not make Meet video calls, the first thing you think about is  how this bar is removed, which reduces the useful space on the screen.

Fortunately, from the settings we have the possibility to do it. We simply have to enter the configuration button, select our email account and uncheck the button  Show the Meet for video calls tab .

If you have several email accounts,  you will have to uncheck the option in each of them . In the same way, if you have a work email where you make Meet video calls, you can leave the tab and deactivate it only in your personal email.
